The Walk
At the start, there are a few car parking spaces beside the road opposite the stile (on the A281 from Pyecombe towards Poynings on the right-hand side about a third of a mile from the garage)
The start.
Follow the path until there is a sharp turn to the left, where you take the righthand path up the slope. There are quite a few steps and it can be quite steep at times. Where you find a junction, continue straight across.
Plenty of steps to the top.
Once over the stile and into the clearing, go right and follow the track. Pass the old concrete and brick foundation and with it on the left, follow the slope down to the right (keeping the trees to your left) and look for an opening between the trees.
Looking to the right you will see Wolstonbury hill.
Once through the opening in the trees, follow the path up to the left. Keep in that direction round to the left with the trees on your left.
Looking along the ridge from left to right, Devil’s Dyke, Edburton and Truleigh.
At the top of the small rise, the path will then start to descend cutting across the slope, through a gap in bushes at various points. The path will gradually level off and following the contour of the slope.
A good view of Devil’s Dyke from Newtimber.
Follow the path down past the old quarry on the left to the stile at Saddlescombe. Take a moment to enjoy a refreshment at the cafe, and if you have time, take a look around Saddlescombe Farm barn and take a look at the donkey wheel.
The donkey wheel.
Resuming at the track beside the cafe and drinking water tap, continue along the track past the cottages on the left. Go through the stile at the gate and go left. Where the path forks again, take the left fork. Follow the path with the hedge to your left until you reach another stile. Go through and follow the path to the signpost where you take the path to the right up the slope.
Looking back down the slope towards Saddlescombe.
Continue up the slope to the gate. You can go through the gate and turn left or continue on straight past the gate to the stile, where you go through and then turn left. After turning left, follow the path down keeping the fence to your left to the next stile on the main track which you now follow down through the trees all the way back to where you started.
